Dumpster Rental Sizes

There are multiple types and dumpster sizes available based on your requirements. Dumpsters are referred to by yards and describe the amount of debris they can hold, so a 10 yard dumpster holds 10 cubic yards of debris. Unsure of which one to pick? See below for sizes and their capacities.

  • 2, 4, 6, and 8 yards: these are the small dumpsters you see in apartment complexes or behind businesses such as offices or restaurants.
  • 10 Yard Dumpsters: ideal for small home renovations, light office or home clean outs or a small landscaping job.
    • Dimensions: 14' long x 7.5' wide x 3.5' tall
  • 20 yard Dumpsters: ideal for building debris from small demolition jobs or medium sized renovation projects such as a master bath. Holds about 2 tons of debris.
    • Dimensions: 22' long x 7.5' wide x 4.5' tall
  • 30 yard Dumpsters: ideal for large home renovations or large construction projects as well as landscaping overhauls.
    • Dimensions: 22' long x 7.5' wide x 6' tall
  • 40 yard Dumpsters: ideal for full demolitions or disaster clean ups, or any other project that produces large amounts of waste. Can hold up to 4 tons, or 8,000 lbs., of debris.
    • Dimensions: 22' long x 7.5' wide x 8' tall

Types of Dumpsters

Don't be confused when different industry professionals refer to dumpsters by different terminology. Below are the most common meanings to help ease the confusion so that you know which dumpster you actually need.

  • Roll-off Dumpster: Open top dumpster that is rectangular in size and utilizes wheels to roll off a semi-truck that delivers them.
  • Construction Dumpster: As the name suggests, these are specifically designed for demolition or construction debris and offer users the ability to use a front singing door for large items that may be too heavy to throw over the top.
  • Commercial Dumpsters: You see commercial dumpsters tucked away in a business parking lot or behind restaurants. They typically have a lid to reduce odors and unlike temporary construction dumpsters, these are usually permanent and are serviced on site.

Dumpster Rental Costs

Costs to rent a dumpster will vary based on the availability and size of the dumpster you need as well as the length of the rental. Oftentimes, the longer you have the dumpster the more cost effective it can be since a quick turn around of a day or two may inquire additional fees.

On average a standard 20 yard dumpster costs $150-190 for the rental and another $100-130 in additional fees such as:

  • Landfill tonnage fee
  • Fuel fee
  • Environmental surcharge
  • Administrative fee
  • Delivery or pick up fee

While not all these fees may be included on your quote, it's best to ask what fees are part of the price and if there are any additional fees you can expect to see that are not included.

Where Can a Dumpster Be Placed?

It is very important to have an idea of where you would like the dumpster to be placed and to have the measurements of the space before renting. Because most of the roll-off dumpster include a wide swinging door on the end, you will want to have enough space to be able to access this convenient door during the time of use.

Certain sized dumpsters require an abundance of space not only for the unit itself, but for the semi-truck to be able to comfortably deliver and pick up the unit. If there is not enough clearance, you may be subject to additional fees.

Homes or businesses in downtown may have to utilize multiple smaller sized dumpsters rather than one large one depending on the available usable space. A professional dumpster company will be able to provide you with the optimal location or clearance to make the delivery and pickup seamless.
